Having not used a ice cream maker since the old fashioned kind with ice and salt- this is quite the item. You do need to make sure the bowl is frozen and that your ice cream mixture is completly cooled. Also, after freezing, it will need time in the freezer to “cure” as the old fashioned kind did. Depending on the consistencey that you like anywhere from a couple hours to overnight. We have tried several different recipes and I think you can adjust any to your liking. Just use the basic 4 ingredients- milk, whipping cream, sugar, and eggs. Also makes great ices, and sherberts for low fat options.

This is a great food machine purchase. I found it easy to use and clean. I read the instruction manual prior to using it to make sure I understood any warning or tips.
The best tip is to make sure your freezer bowl is frozen in advance. It has liquid inside that must freeze completely prior to use.
Here’s my main thoughts on it:
I put the machine together in about 3 minutes.
I used the recipe booklet included to make my first batch of vanilla ice cream.
I like that it makes the recipes from scratch. I can use organic ingredients if I so desired.
I fed a family of three with the ice cream dispensed from it. We were all very happy with the results.
One thing I noticed is the size of the machine needs open space and may not fit under most counters.
If we didnt eat all the ice cream immediately, I place a tupperware bowl underneath the spout. Placed it in the freezer. It did not get hard after a few hours in the freezer. So it can be made ahead of time or during dinner.

I would recommend the machine to another person.

After reviewing what everybody else has written I have learned
that you have to keep this freezer bowl in the back of your
freezer just to make ice cream. I can make some flavor and
put that in my freezer and make some ice cream without buying
this machine on my own. I want a self contained ice cream
maker that can make a product by plugging it in the wall
without a freezer in sight. So I guess this product is
    not for me.

Make sure your freezer is zero degrees and follow the instructions, it is that easy. Takes a little longer than 20 minutes to get the consistancy I like 30 minutes is more like it. Great soft serve, will stand right up in a cone no problem.

Got his as a gift for Christmas…what a thoughtful friend! We live far out into the country and getting ice cream home during the summer is almost impossible..even with freezer bags, ice chests, etc, the store bought ice cream is often runny. We just got used to the idea that we could not have fancy grocery store ice cream during July and August :(
As long as you follow the instructions and keep the freezer bowl in the back of your freezer (I keep the bowl in our spare frig’s top freezer, so it is not often opened), it makes decent soft serve ice cream. Take the time to read the other reviews and you can learn alot about how to operate this Cuisinart…it’s very simple, but there are a few “tricks” to make it even easier.
The only additional advice I can add, is to buy the Ben and Jerry’s ice cream recipe book with this and make some FANTASTIC ice cream. Just follow the instructions for making soft serve and after about 12 minutes, dump the soft serve into a tupperware bowl and freeze for a few hours – delicious!! The ice cream will taste as good (if not better) than the most expensive ice cream and costs very, very little.
This unit is simple and easy to operate. Making the ice cream mix is easy and cleanup is a snap.
Probably the nicest and most fun gift we have ever received!

I had ordered the Cuisinart Ice Cream maker and liked it so much I decided to order an extra container to make more ice cream at one time ;-)

Very good product, works just as advertised. My ONLY gripe is that it gtakes so long to freeze the unit. LOL

Ice cream maker worked well but why are there no included covers for the ice cream bowls? Directions say to “transfer” ice cream to an airtight container but that seems like an extra unnecessary hassle.

I bought this for a Father’s day gift for my dad. My mom was so happy that I did. She likes that the original bowl is black so that she can tell when she puts one back in the freezer which one to use next. They practically make ice cream every day and you have to freeze the bowls at least 24 hours or they don’t make the ice cream hard enough. So if they do use them every day she can tell that she used the silver one Tuesday so Wednesday she will use the black one. I will definately order one for myself now!

I bought one of these for myself about a year ago then decided to buy this one from Amazon.com for my Mom for Christmas. I keep the freezer bowl in the freezer all the time just in case I want to make some at the last minute. I find that it only takes about 20 mins to have the ice cream frozen and ready. Of course, you do have to follow the instructions which say to chill the mixture in the fridge for a while. If you don’t, then it may take longer and not set up as hard. I usually make it ahead of dinner then when it’s finished I put it into a container and put it in the freezer to serve for dessert. It does make some noise but not excessively. Still don’t want to hear it while eating dinner. It’s pretty easy to use and pretty easy to clean up afterwards. Love it. Ice cream is as good as the recipe you use and as good as any other home made ice cream I’ve ever had.

I agree with the rest of the 1 star reviews. The machine will run for the designated time (sometimes 30 minutes +) and at the end you just have very cold sweet creamy soup! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!!

  11. Earle on June 30th, 2010 10:44 am

This is a great, simple product for making delicious ice cream and frozen yogurt! It’s a blast to create your own flavors and recipes and reap the rewards.

    Two major points of emphasis:

    1) You must freeze the empty bucket for at least several hours (overnight is best) before you make anything.

    2) You must freeze the products in a separate container (not included) for at least 4-6 hours or overnight before it is the right consistency.

So while it only takes 20-30 minutes to run, it actually requires a couple days planning to have the desserts when you want them. This is just the reality of making frozen desserts and not a flaw in the product.

OVERALL: Highly recommended as a gift for dessert lovers
ALSO: The booklet that comes with actually has a great set of handy recipes you can use as a base to make almost anything you can dream up.

This is my first frozen dessert maker of any kind.

Will give details on what I think of it after I actually use it :)

    Pros:
Excellent appearance, one of the few appliances I have out on my counter, get compliments/questions frequently.
Works well (makes a great cinnamon chocolate ice cream!)
    Great warranty
    Very durable ice bowl

    Cons:
Even with a solid freeze of the bowl you’ll need to put the ice cream in the freezer for an hour or two afterwards. Just too soft for more than a little taste.
Slightly cheap inner ice cream mixer apparatus (plastic on plastic gears/blades)
Any heavy mixings added towards end still fall to bottom due to soft consistency and poor stirring

I’ve only used this once, to make plain vanilla ice cream (following the recipe in the manual), and the ice cream was excellent. Like other machines out there, it is a bit deceiving to think you can have fresh ice cream made in 30 minutes; the reality is the inside container must be frozen for hours before-hand, and many recipes require that the mix be refrigerated for several hours before being made. It is also a fairly loud machine while in use, so I won’t be using it when my children are sleeping. The end result, however, is very good.

I was a little skeptical when this came home because we have used the salt style machines with not great success. With in 20 minutes we had some tasty strawberry and mint chocolate chip ice cream. It’s great you can make 2 different flavors at once. We cut the recommended sugar in half to make it even healthier, and the recipe was still great! Simple, easy to find ingredients makes this easy for anybody. Also tweaking the receipes a little to your individual taste has been fun too. When it was finished it wasn’t liquid like at all, but a nice consistency. This is an amazing product and I highly recommend it. Kids love helping, and clean up is super easy. Cant wait to try some summer time drinks.

I love this machine! It’s perfect because of the flexibility; if I want a lot of one flavor I can use both bowls for the same kind or I can easily make two different kinds. Since I don’t do dairy products this has saved me so much money and hassle in avoiding the dreaded $6+ a pint non-dairy ice creams.

My only complaint about this ice cream maker is not having gotten it sooner!

Freezes fast, quiet operation, a good product.I am glad we bought the dual container one instead of the single chamber.
